softcity

Thursday November 3, 7-11PM
North Wall of TEATRO Restaurant (200 – 8th Avenue SE)

Soft City depicts an imaginary dreamscape full of strange animals and plants.  Inspired by oceanic, under-water life, creatures emerge from openings in the façade, slowly filling the building with vibrant, tactile imagery.  Using stop-motion animation techniques, the creatures constructed with wire, yarn, and wool felt come alive in an interactive dance with the building.

Lydia Karpenko is a Ukrainian born, Canadian based interdisciplinary artist. Her work includes various forms of interactive installation, animation, and fibre art, exploring the juxtaposition between digital media and handcrafted objects. Working with a combination of manually generated techniques and new media, she examines how personal narrative structures can shape cultural self-identity.

Have you ever seen a giant animation projected on the side of a building? Created through the QuickTrack Program, 4 emerging professional artists were selected as artists-in-residence for a 3-month animation production project utilizing the facilities of Quickdraw Animation Society. These artists were commissioned to create new short animations, receiving mentorship, technical support and access to equipment. We asked them to think GIANT… and they did.
